WHAT'S THE EU ACCESSIBILITY ACT, AND WHY SHOULD FREELANCERS CARE?

As of this week, the EU Accessibility Act (EAA) requires all digital products and services sold or used in the EU to meet WCAG 2.1 Level AA accessibility standards. That means your website, app, online course, or client work (like PDFs, proposals, or digital templates) must be usable by people with disabilities, including those who use screen readers, have visual impairments, or need keyboard navigation.

How this impacts your business:

• If you build websites, sell digital products, or run an online business, your site must now meet accessibility guidelines – even if you’re a one-woman show or solo freelancer.

• Client-facing work matters too: If you create websites, slide decks, or platforms for clients in the EU, you’re responsible for helping them comply.
  ​

• Non-compliance can lead to fines or lost opportunities, especially for service providers working with bigger orgs or public sector clients.

What to do now (even if you're not "techy"):

• Check your website: Is your font readable? Are your colours high contrast? Can someone tab through your site without using a mouse?

• Add alt text to all your images
  ​
• Make sure your PDFs are readable with screen readers
  ​
• If you use Showit, WordPress, or Notion – check their accessibility settings and plugins
